THE AURAL FEELING
Shamendu Sonavane, an artist, known for his brilliant portrayal of nature, has been painting nature at its vivid best for last several years.
His canvases painted with acrylics, revolve around the theme of nature and its varied fascinating hues. In fact, nature has been his constant source of inspiration. Shamendu Sonavane has crafted nature into abstracts, which convey a sense of déjà vu since one can read the shoreline of beaches of the city of Mumbai. His work arouses an aural feeling of the waves having thunderously crashed on the weathering sands and receded in silence. In another creation, there is the brine of the sea invading the viewers’ sensibilities. Such is the magical aura of his canvases that grips a viewer. Shamendu Sonavane’s canvases generate a sense of quietude and grandeur in terms of its horizontal format as well as colors and tones. The artist has evolved and constructed his paintings in horizontal format implying a sense of infinity. His paintings, as mentioned above, are inspired by nature. They are exquisite, even in the limited space of the canvas.
Shamendu Sonavane’s works from the series, ‘Under the Earth’ done a couple of years ago has won critical acclaim. The human tragedy in form a devastating earthquake that hit the state of Maharashtra in early nineties has prompted the artist to work on the series. The artist in the series made an attempt to capture the interiors of the earth on canvas through colors and dramatic structures.
A brilliant colorist, Shamendu Sonavane has judiciously juxtaposed fragmented patches of brilliant, contrasting and harmonious colors to create a kaleidoscope of detritus found on the beaches. His soothing colors define his individual style. The artist employs knife strokes, brush strokes and the spray technique in limited color combinations as he brings out the beauty of nature on canvas. His creations are soaked in the nature’s myriad moods- from serene to turbulent on occasions, defining endless forms and symmetry abounding in hills, mountains, valleys, and rivers. He captures the beauty that lies in natural objects such as rocks, foliage, etc. The intimate detailing and craftsmanship in his work makes his canvases noteworthy.
