Ranjit Sarkar, born in Kolkata in 1975, is an accomplished artist with a rich and diverse artistic journey. He embarked on his artistic path as a graduate of Calcutta University in 1997, where he laid the foundation for his creative endeavors. Early in his artistic career, Sarkar had the privilege of studying Indian-style painting under the guidance of Professor Samir Ghosh, the Department head of Chandpara Art College. This formative period instilled in him a deep appreciation for the intricacies of Indian artistry.

Sarkar’s artistic pursuits led him to Hyderabad, where he pursued a Diploma in Painting from DQ between 2010 and 2012. This marked a significant phase in his development as an artist, allowing him to refine his skills and broaden his artistic horizons.

Throughout his artistic journey, Ranjit Sarkar’s work has been characterized by a dramatic representation infused with a continuous exploration of the mutation of mythology and religious characters. His creations reflect a profound concern for the intricate relationships between human passions and their surroundings, often involving attempts to modify natural appearances to achieve an intense impression of realism.

Inspired by the literary works of Rabindranath Tagore, Sarkar’s earliest portraits featured legendary figures like Guru Dutt and Tagore. This illustrates his ability to draw inspiration from diverse sources, both literary and cultural, enriching his artistic expression.

One notable and recurring theme in Ranjit Sarkar’s art is the representation of women. His paintings serve as a homage to the beautiful and inspiring women he encountered during his formative years, celebrating their presence through his artistic lens. This fascination with portraying women in his artwork traces its roots to his childhood, where he and his brother would sketch and draw, setting the stage for his future in portraiture and painting.

Dance, particularly Kathaputli, Kalbeliya, and Dandia, holds a significant place in Sarkar’s artistic repertoire.
