ABOUT SHIV KUMAR SONI
Childhood Memories

Shiv Kumar Soni (b. 1992, Rajasthan, India) is a contemporary Indian artist whose work delicately bridges memory, imagination, and emotion through the lens of childhood.

Born in Bidasar, Churu, Soni spent his early years surrounded by the simplicity and quiet poetry of small-town life—an influence that continues to echo through his visual language. Driven by a passion for art, he moved to Jaipur to formally pursue his creative ambitions, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the Rajasthan School of Art.

In his early artistic journey, Soni developed a distinctive technique—using acrylics in a watercolor-like style—allowing him to achieve softness, fluidity, and dreamlike textures. This unique approach became central to his practice, complementing his thematic focus on nostalgia and innocence.

At the heart of Soni’s work lies a deep engagement with childhood as both memory and metaphor. Drawing from personal experiences, observations, and imagination, he reconstructs moments of simple joy—flying kites, playing in the rain, interacting with toys, or drifting into fantastical daydreams. These scenes are often populated with recurring motifs such as birds, balloons, hats, and everyday objects, reimagined with a playful and poetic sensibility.

A significant evolution in his work is the introduction of an imaginative character named “Puppy”—a stylized child figure inspired partly by self-reflection. Through this alter ego, Soni explores identity, nostalgia, and emotional connection, offering viewers a relatable entry point into his world. His use of bright, contrasting color palettes further enhances the vibrancy and emotional resonance of these narratives.

Soni’s practice extends beyond figuration into landscapes, where his affinity for nature finds expression through watercolor works that reflect serenity and introspection—another thread rooted in childhood experiences.

Over the years, his work has been widely exhibited across India and internationally. His early solo exhibition “The Childhood” (2015, Jaipur) laid the foundation for his artistic voice, followed by a solo presentation at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai (2019), and “Treasure Trove of Childhood Memories” at The Project Café, Goa (2022), which further established his signature theme. Alongside, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions at prominent venues including Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata, Singapore, Dubai, New York, and Pune, reflecting a growing global presence.

Today, Shiv Kumar Soni continues to evolve as an artist, guided by curiosity and reflection. His work serves as both a personal archive and a universal mirror—inviting viewers to revisit their own childhoods in an increasingly digital world where such innocence often fades. Through his paintings, he preserves fleeting joys, reminding us that the essence of childhood remains timeless, waiting to be rediscovered.
