ABOUT BHARTI PRAJAPATI
Pancha Tatva

Born in 1962 in Vadodara, Gujarat, Bharti Prajapati has established herself as a distinguished contemporary artist known for reimagining Indian folk traditions through a modern lens. Her creative journey began with formal training in Textile Design, first at Sophia Polytechnic in Mumbai, followed by the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad.

Her time at NID proved to be a pivotal turning point. During this period, extensive travels across India—specifically to the arid regions of Kutch, as well as Telangana and Kerala—exposed her to the vibrant roots of Indian design. She was particularly captivated by the women of Kutch, whose vivid clothing and intricate gold jewelry offered a striking contrast against the pale, dry desert landscape.

After a successful decade-long career as a textile designer, Prajapati transitioned to her true passion: painting. Her background in design continues to inform her artistic practice, allowing her to expertly balance intricate detailing with stark, open spaces. This synthesis creates a harmonious blend where characters are exalted, often depicted in a heightened state of movement against vast, atmospheric backgrounds.

Prajapati’s work is deeply thematic, often thriving on the interplay of the Pancha Tattva—the five elements of earth, air, fire, water, and space. Utilizing a natural palette of earthy reds, ochres, and sudden splashes of indigo, she captures the essence of elemental energy. Her celebrated ‘Earth Series’ explores the rhythmic beauty of song and dance, portraying tribal women radiating the joy of togetherness. Additionally, her portfolio encompasses spiritual narratives, ranging from depictions of Krishna to visual translations of Saint Kabir’s Dohas, where she bridges literature and visual art.

Over the years, her work has gained significant recognition. Prajapati has held 17 solo shows and participated in numerous group exhibitions and auctions globally, including in London, New York, and Singapore. Her accolades include the Lalit Kala Gaurav Puraskar (2015), the Bharat Kala Ratna Award (2016), the FICCI Women Achiever Award, and the Critics’ Choice Award from the World University of Design. She currently lives and works in Ahmedabad.
