How to determine and calculate the RIGHT SIZE for your artwork?
Choosing a beautiful artwork is the hard part of selecting and purchasing art until you have seen it fit well live in your space. It isn’t just about hanging your artwork and pictures; the perfect size of the artworks helps anchor a painting or a picture in your space and tie it into a room’s decor.
The right or wrong size of the picture frame can completely change the artwork and how it works within your space.
Oversized Artwork ❌
Apt Size ✔️
Undersized Artwork ❌
As you can see, an oversized artwork can overpower unnecessarily and an undersized artwork can easily look undervalued or lost in the entire overwhelming interior space.
So, the question then arises. How do you find the perfect size of artwork for different spaces of your house without placing many heavy artworks to check every time you like something?
Here’s a simple procedure that will help you find the perfect range of the artwork that will suit your wall
Measurements
First, you will measure the dimensions of the wall space where you want to put up your artwork
(Height – as shown on the left)
(Width – as shown on the right)
*Do not include skirting and coving/crown moulding. Smartly measure the blank walls which do not include elements like doors and window so as to get the center of the blank space and determine the artwork size accordingly and not go off – proportions.
Calculation using Formula
To find the range,
you will use the simple formulas given here
(For height – on the left)
(For width – on the right)
Sample
Let’s consider a wall with the height 5 ft (i.e., 60 inches) and the width of 7 ft (i.e., 84 inches)
Minimum artwork height = 0.6 x 60″ = 36″
Maximum artwork height = 0.75 x 60″ = 45″
Minimum artwork width = 0.6 x 84″ = 50.4″
Maximum artwork width = 0.75 x 84″ = 63″
Hence, the apt artwork size range for a 5′ x 7′ wall would be
36″ – 45″ by 50.4″ – 63″
In a nutshell – Don’t hang anything too small above a piece of furniture, as the art will be overwhelmed by its weight and scale. On the other hand, don’t hang artwork that is way too big above your furniture either, as it will look completely disproportionate.
The scale and ratio of course matters a lot. Whether you want a more vertically or horizontally elongated painting. The general visual aesthetic fundamentals tell you to go with the proportions of the wall, but then again, there are exceptions to unusual, asymmetrical and intentionally bizzarre interior designs and decors.
