The Protector – Vishnu

Artist:

  • Pooja Mhatre

In Hinduism, Lord Vishnu is seen as the protector. The Matsya Avatar is regarded as the first of his ten incarnations (Dashavatara). Lord Vishnu took this form to protect the world from the catastrophic flood (Pralaya) and to save creation.

The painting titled Protector is themed around this concept. It incorporates shapes associated with Lord Vishnu, each carrying its own symbolic meaning.

We are often depicted seeing Lord Vishnu seated on the Sheshnag (the divine serpent). In this artwork, both the Sheshnag and the fish from the Matsya Avatar are prominently featured. Vishnu is known as the protector, Brahma as the creator, and Shiva as the destroyer. The numerous eyes visible in the painting symbolically represent Vishnu’s watchful presence over the entire creation. Other elements in the painting, such as the feet, the lotus, the tortoise, and footprints, are all symbolic and auspicious signs. Abstract forms such as houses and waves also appear, symbolizing the cosmos under Vishnu’s protective watch.

The painting carries a profound meaning, one that is entirely positive. As you gaze at it, the painting seems to engage with you, creating an ongoing connection.
